Hungary’s chief negotiator with the International Monetary Fund began meetings in Washington on the 9 January 2012 aimed at paving the way to a financial support package seen as crucial to restore market confidence in the central European country.

It was suggested that Hungary’s government had woken up to the seriousness of the situation after weeks of suggesting it was not prepared to accept economic policy conditions from the IMF (and the EU) and could live without a loan deal.
