Hungary seeks EU joining date

The Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, met French government officials on 5 October 2000, to discuss preparations for Hungary to join the European Union. Mr Orban, who is visiting Paris, urged France -- which holds the current Presidency of the European Union -- not to allow its application for EU membership to be held up by problems in other countries that are also seeking to join.
