Hungary’s President Pal Schmitt bowed to public pressure and resigned on the 2 April 2012 amid a plagiarism scandal, in an embarrassment to the country’s centre-right Fidesz government.

Though his post was largely ceremonial, Mr Schmitt, an ally of prime minister Viktor Orban, had played a central role in signing into a law a series of reforms that have sometimes strained relations with the European Union and other international partners.
