They do not dish out many medals for services rendered in the Commission, so a lot of top honchos were naturally deeply disappointed at the silence which has followed Austrian suggestions that some gallant souls might be in line for some sort of gong.

It all started just after the entry negotiations were successfully completed. Vienna got in touch with a few senior figures, taking soundings about whether or not protocol would permit the handing out of tokens of recognition for the thoroughly splendid jobs which were done to ensure the smooth completion of enlargement negotiations.

After careful inquiries, officials were pleased to inform the Austrians that there was nothing in the staff regulations to preclude honourable recognition, and all they had to do was name the time and place.

But nearly two years later, morning suits remain pressed and unwrinkled, and ceremonial hats still rest in their boxes.

Every letter and phone call to Commission headquarters brings confirmation of the unthinkable - the Austrians appear to have forgotten.

Meanwhile the Finns have given out some awards, even though the Swedes frown on such fripperies.

So come on Austria, do the decent thing. Or do you want to see dozens of self-important acceptance speeches go to waste?
