Geir Haarde, the former Icelandic Prime Minister, went on trial on the 5 March 2012 over his handling of the country’s 2008 banking crash. This article discusses the reaction to the trial as it came to an end in mid-March 2012.

It was supposed to be the cathartic moment of their financial tragedy, but many Icelanders, the article reported, felt that the trial of their former prime minister had been little but a disappointment.

The generally negative attitude to the trial among business leaders and voters was in contrast to the view of many historians, political scientists and outside observers who, while acknowledging the problems, emphasised that it marked a step in the right direction of recovery for Iceland.
