Almost one in six people in the EU aged 15 and over live with some kind of disability. As the population ages, this number is expected to rise significantly. In February 2017, the European Commission published a progress report on the implementation of the European disability strategy 2010-2020.

The European Parliament was due to discuss an own-initiative report on the strategy's implementation during its November II 2017 plenary session
