stabilised in July at 1.4&percent; compared with June and with the same month a year before, according to the latest figures from the EU's statistical agency Eurostat. In the Union as a whole, inflation slowed marginally to 1.5&percent; from 1.6&percent; in June and 1.6&percent; in July last year. Giovanni Ravasio, the European Commission's director-general for economic and financial affairs, told MEPs: “I don't think there is any chance of inflation getting out of control.” Austria and France had the lowest inflation rate at just 0.8&percent;, while Greece had the highest at 4.8&percent;.
