This article reviews the recent evolution of Galicia (Spain) as an autonomous region. The main idea is that the regional institutional setting that was developed to administrate these high levels of autonomy and resources is playing an important role in its process of national identification and nation construction. Regional institutions are a key variable for explaining recent economic, political and social changes in Galicia and also the behaviour and strategies of the main Galician actors.
