Cross-border supervision of banking in Europe needs to be stepped up to encourage integration and ensure the stability of financial systems, the head of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, said 9 May 2007. He urged European Union countries to step up co-operation between national banking regulators in response to the growing internationalisation of the continent's banks.
