Book abstract:

The second edition of this title will probably follow the success route of the author's first edition and quickly become the established textbook in its field at many of Europe's universities. It deals with the law as of 31 December 2001 although certain decisions and legislation which came into existence early in 2002 are also included.

The work is split into three sections. The first is concerned with the existence, nature and extent of Intellectual Property Rights in Europe. Patents, trade marks, copyright, industrial design rights and plant variety rights are all examined in a European context. The second section covers the effect of the free movement of goods and services provisions and the competition provisions of the European Community Treaty (ECT) on the enforcement and licensing of intellectual property. The third section examines the issue of jurisdiction in the context of intellectual property litigation in Europe. The volume is organised as a textbook and the seventy-three pages given to the Table of Contents and nearly as long index provide an important and useful 'route guide' to the 1000 pages of text.

The work will become an essential textbook for students, scholars and practitioners in the fields of patent law, competition and intellectual property law.

Guy Tritton lectures to both ITMA (Institute of Trade Mark Agents) at Kings College, London and CIPA (Chartered Institute of Patent Agents) students. He has also lectured on trade mark law at Queen Mary & Westfield College to postgraduates. He is a member of the Intellectual Property Bar Association; the Chancery Bar Association and the Bar European Group.
