Introduction to the law of the European Communities. From Maastricht to Amsterdam, 3rd ed.:
A substantial textbook to the law of the European Communities comprising over 1,400 pages. The book was originally written in Dutch. This third edition of the English version is based on the fifth edition of the Dutch version. The English version is not simply a translation from the Dutch but is adapted by Laurence Gormley to 'combine the strengths of the continental and the English approach'. Compared to UK-originating titles on EC law, much attention is paid to Dutch, French, German and Italian literature in the field. The text is up-to-date to May 1998.

'Introduction to the law of the European Communities' covers institutional, policy-making and substantive issues (including the four freedoms of the Internal Market, competition policy, economic, monetary and social policy, horizontal and flanking policies, sectoral policies, external relations). The volume is completed with an epilogue called 'The horizon 2000', which looks at current challenges facing the EU. A feature of the book is the relation of the law to economics and politics and the various policy areas to each other and to the institutional framework. This makes the book eminently readable to the non-legal specialist, although as in all legal sources there are the standard tables of cases and treaties, footnotes and an index.
