Irish Yes vote clears EU enlargement path / Irish Yes vote clears obstacle to EU enlargement

Ireland ratified the Treaty of Nice following a second referendum on 19 October 2002. The Yes vote was carried by a margin of 62.9% to 37.1% The result was greeted with relief in the candidate countries which hope to complete accession talks at the European Council in Copenhagen in December 2002.
