At the end of 2017, one year after the beginning of Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s presidency, the formerly closed state of Uzbekistan was turning into an active regional player. If this trend continued, Tashkent could become a leader among the Central Asian states.

In a later Expert Comment 'Uzbekistan’s New President Steps Towards Ambitious Reform With Security Chief Sacking' published on the 8 February 2018 (see related hyperlinks below) the author suggested that the recent dismissal of the powerful head of the security service Rustam Inoyatov was the latest move in a bold programme.
