Issing hits back at critics of euro-zone rates policy

On 27.4.01, Otmar Issing, the European Central Bank's chief economist, countered mounting criticism of the refusal of the ECB to cut interest rates by saying it was wrong to expect the euro-zone to replace the US as the engine of world economic growth.
