Protests against austerity and liberalisation laws passed by Italy’s technocratic government escalated on the 23 January 2012 as truck drivers took their demonstrations against higher fuel costs nationwide, leading to serious disruption on key motorways.

Taxi drivers also staged a strike and railway workers announced action for 27 January 2012. They would be joined later by lawyers, pharmacists and petrol station operators.
