Italians get a reminder that their president is more than a figurehead

Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Italy's President, has taken the rare step of refusing to sign a media bill into law. The bill was drafted by the Government of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Mr Ciampi's action has put under the spotlight Mr Berlusconi's anomalous position as both media tycoon and Head of Government.
