Italy, given also the presidency of the G8, has devoted unusually high levels of attention to Africa in 2009. However, the numerous policy actions, carried out both by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and surprisingly also by the Ministry of Economic Development, betray a fundamental lack of coherence and clarity on the ultimate objectives of Italian involvement in Sub-Saharan Africa. Given the high number of actors trying to acquire an influential position in the continent, it is particularly important that Italy clarifies its strategic priorities, be it in terms of issues to be addressed and in terms of countries with which it wants to strengthen a relationship. |
