Italy and Austria

have moved closer to becoming full members of the Schengen free movement zone following a meeting between the leaders of Italy, Austria and Germany. They agreed to try to lift border controls between their countries by 1 April next year. The deal will have to be formally approved by the full Schengen executive committee at its next meeting on 8 October.
