With the collapse of the Ben Ali regime in Tunisia in January 2011, thousands of Tunisians have caught the boat to Europe. Their landing on the nearby Italian island of Lampedusa and the chaos this has caused in February 2011 foreshadows what could happen on the southern shores of the EU if the migration controls worked out with North African countries were to vanish.

Articles discuss this issue and Italy's wider relations with the countries of North Africa as well as the EU's policies on asylum, refugees and illegal immigration.

The Italian government formally requested aid from the European Union to help it cope with the thousands of Tunisians arriving on its shores.
