Italy. From the First to the Second Republic

Book abstract:

This textbook has been designed to provide students with an up-to-date and accessible introduction to the complexities of Italian politics. The book covers the period from the First Republic, which began in 1948 when the postwar constitution was put into effect and ended in the early 1990s. The early years of the 1990s can appropriately be described as a period of transition, with the victory in the March 1994 election by a totally different coalition of parties and the creation of a centre-right government marking what is generally cited as the formal beginnings of the Second Republic. This government was followed two years later by one based on a centre-left coalition, and both signified major changes in Italian political behaviour. The authors attempt to present a balance between the events and political behaviour of the years from 1948 to 1998 and the major change in 1994, while recognising that rapid political change will continue for some time yet. They hope that the book will provide the foundation for understanding many of these changes.

The comprehensive coverage includes: an introduction to contemporary history, political geography and economic issues as well as Italian political values and attitudes; a section on political behaviour which explores political parties, interest groups and the electoral earthquakes of the 1990s; a section on government institutions and their roles, including discussion of the executive, the legislature, the judiciary and the subnational government; analysis of Italy's often stormy relationship with the European Union; and an exploration of events such as attempts at institutional reform. Throughout the book, the authors emphasise problems that have plagued Italy in the 1990s, including corruption, bureaucracy, political deadlock, terrorism and organised crime.

This book will give students a sound understanding of the basics of Italian politics and government, providing clear insights into the intricacies of Italian political behaviour.
