Matteo Renzi, reformist mayor of Florence and possible would-be prime minister, broke his silence over Italy’s political paralysis on the 4 April 2013 by openly challenging the national leadership of the centre-left Democratic party.

Mr Renzi threw down the gauntlet with a call to Pier Luigi Bersani, the party’s wounded secretary, to abandon his opposition to forming a coalition government with the centre-right of Silvio Berlusconi, former prime minister, or prepare for an immediate return to the polls.
