2008 is the fi rst year of the newly-agreed European Agenda for Culture. The European Council’s endorsement of this agenda at the end of 2007 marked a historic breakthrough - the first time
that all the member states at top political level have explicitly recognised the importance of culture as a central aspect of the European Union. Xavier Troussard looks at what it means for Europe, now, and in the future.
