The United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond and Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, David Davis both visited Germany on the 10 January 2018 to discuss with German political and economic interests the UK's aspirations to have a deep and special partnership with its closest trading partners and allies in Europe after the UK has left the European Union. They took part in the Die Welt Economic Summit. On the same day as their visit a joint article by Philip Hammond and David Davis was published in the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. In a response a German government spokesman said that its focus remained on preserving EU unity in the run-up to the next Brexit talks. |
