In an interview with the Financial Times on 13 May 2003, the leader of the UK Liberal Democrat party, Charles Kennedy, predicted that the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and his Chancellor, Gordon Brown, would agree a euro compromise that leaves open the 'vague possibility' of a referendum on joining the single currency later this parliament.
