Robert Kilroy-Silk has conceded defeat in his attempt to take over the leadership of the UK Independence party by resigning from the UKIP group in the European Parliament, 27 October 2004. Close supporters acknowledged that his decision to serve as an independent MEP ruled him out of becoming party leader before the general election.
