The Kremlin is rolling out the red carpet for United Kingdom Foreign Secretary, William Hague, and offering him the 'rare honour' of direct talks with the Russian head of state Dmitry Medvedev on his official visit to Russia, October 2010. Relations between the two countries have been strained for a number of years.

However, the UK refused to make any diplomatic concessions to Russia over the murder of Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2007, maintaining the tough sanctions that it imposed then, even as both countries sought to improve economic ties.
