Book abstract:

This book is one of the latest publications in Longman's 'Frameworks' series which aims to provide a thorough and yet concise introduction to a specific area of business, legal and financial subjects in the higher education curriculum. The books offer a step by step guide to essential principles and develop a basic framework of understanding to underpin further study.

'Law of the European Union' provides the reader with coverage of the development of the EC and the EU, its institutions and their roles and the relationship between EU and national law all in a single volume. It also covers competition law, internal market regulation and the more recent social dimensions of EC law.

Keeping apace of the changes in EC law, this third edition covers the impact of the Treaty of Amsterdam and some of the 'third pillar' areas which now fall within legal control of the EU as well as the issue of subsidiarity. There is also a discussion of the progress in economic and monetary union, an analysis of the harmonisation of intellectual property law and an explanation of the recent changes in competition law. Even the 2000 Intergovernmental Conference is discussed.

Aside from providing a useful analysis of the key topics of EC law the book also shows the reader where to find the law in law reports, databases and on the Internet. This addition makes the book a useful guide for all students of EU law, CPE and Diplomas.

Penelope Kent is a Principal Lecturer at Middlesex University Business School.
