Few issues divide British politics like the European Union. The rise of UKIP and the Conservative party’s commitment to an in/out referendum have increased the probability of a national vote on membership in the near future, the outcome of which would be difficult to predict. Meanwhile, the current government’s pursuit of a ‘new settlement’ with the EU remains a largely unfulfilled, and loosely-defined, ambition. Changes in Europe, and particularly within the eurozone, in the coming years are also likely to present a challenge to Britain and the other states that remain outside the single currency.

At this event the speakers discussed these challenges, and considerd how the next government could meet demands for reform, whilst maintaining its influence in the European Union. Chatham House Director Robin Niblett discussed the challenges and choices for the UK as a member of the EU with Rt Hon Dominic Grieve QC MP; Peter Kellner, President, YouGov; and Quentin Peel, Mercator Senior Fellow, Chatham House.
