What are EU directives and what will happen to them when the UK leaves the EU? This paper looks at EU directives in force and how they are implemented in the UK. In December 2016 there were nearly 900 Directives in force, almost all of which apply to the UK. This will give some idea of the task ahead for UK legislators.

Very usefully, this guide lists EU directives in force, linking them, where applicable, to implementing measures in the UK, and to some extent the devolved administrations and Gibraltar. In the electronic version of the guide there are direct hyperlinks to the legislative texts.

It is one of a series of Library briefings on different elements of the EU acquis and Brexit, and will be updated periodically. Other related Briefings can be accessed via the related url hyperlinks.
