The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) met in Budapest on 19 November for their annual congress. The Liberals were expected to elect a new president. Siim Kallas and Hans Van Baalen were the two candidates for leadership, and the latter eventually won the election/

Liberals lost seats in the 2014 European elections. With 70 MEPs from 21 countries in the European Parliament, they dropped from the third- to the fourth-largest group.
