ENTERPRISE and Information Society Commissioner Erkki Liikanen meets top brass at Airbus in Toulouse today (21 November) in a bid to plot the next course for the Union's defence and aviation sector.

The Finn will discuss with CEO Nöel Forgeard how the EU aerospace sector can compete with US rivals such as Boeing.

Airbus - a key shareholder in the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) - is currently winning the race for civilian jet orders against Boeing. But Liikanen fears that unless they can wield similar economies of scale to the US, EU firms will struggle to compete across a broader range of products as the Union builds up its common foreign and security policy.

The commissioner, who unveils a report on EU industrial policy next month, will also discuss with Airbus bosses how the Union can better focus R&D in the aerospace sector.
