Making improvements on paper

Not every official is overjoyed by the European Commission's attempts to modernise its administration and personnel policy. But there is no doubt that some aspects of its MAP 2000 programme are bearing fruit and will be welcomed by environmentalists.

Greater use of the Internet and of electronic mail has led to a drastic reduction in the institution's paper bill. At the latest count, it means that 29 million fewer A4 pages will be printed this year - the equivalent of 139 tonnes of paper.
