ITALIAN Radical MEP Marco Cappato, a trenchant critic of the effect the international drive against terrorism is having on civil liberties, celebrates after being named European of the Year.

The 31-year-old received the European Voice award after an online poll, which attracted 7,500 votes from more than 100 countries.

The deputy used the gala event at Brussels' Musées des Beaux-Arts to emphasise his support for stem cell research, to which another award winner in the EV50 poll, Campaigner of the Year Pope John Paul II, is strongly opposed.

Italian Radical MEP Marco Cappato has been voted European of the Year 2002 in a European Voice poll.
