Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, attempted to shore up his authority with a television appearance on the 30 Serptember 2011 defending his planned job swap with Vladimir Putin, prime minister, and his decision to sack the country’s finance minister.

In an interview with Russia’s three biggest television stations Mr Medvedev explained that his decision earlier in September 2011 to step aside and nominate Mr Putin to run in the presidential election in March 2012 was a logical reflection of his powerful mentor’s higher approval ratings.
