The European Council president met with Montenegro's prime minister on 26 January 2017. During the meeting, he was briefed on the country's political and economic situation and the state of the political dialogue following an alleged coup attempt.

The EU official also reaffirmed his support of Montenegrin Euro-Atlantic ambitions, argued against nationalist tendencies in the region and highlighted the need for the country to continue its EU accession efforts.
