In a corner of northern France, stricken by industrial decline, the country’s two most colourful politicians were once again locked in a no-holds-barred battle between far right and far left.

The confrontation between Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Front, and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, champion of the communist-backed Left Front, dominated elections for the National Assembly in France, which was due to take place over two rounds on 10 and 17 June 2012.
