Membership bid threatens fresh rift within Germany’s SPD

Further difficulties could arise in German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's Social Democratic Party as SPD parliamentarians issued calls on 5 October 2004 for a party debate on the issue of Turkey's bid to join the European Union.
