	On 17 December 2013, the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, sent a message of congratulations to Dr Angela Merkel, who was re-elected by the Bundestag as Federal Chancellor of Germany. On 16 December 2013, the grand coalition deal to form a new government was signed by party leaders from SPD, CDU and CSU in Berlin.
