Speaking at the World Economic Forum, Davos, 24 January 2007, Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, speaking in her capacity as current G-8 President and head of the EU Presidency, said that the twin demands of action to prevent climate change and enhance energy security requires Europe to commit to challenging mandatory controls on greenhouse gasses after 2012.

She also said said globalisation is a force for good but that all countries must be treated fairly and integrated into the global economy. 'Globalisation offers far more opportunities than risks for people - more peace, more prosperity and more growth'.
