Merkel hopes boosted by FDP move

Germany’s liberal Free Democratic party on 20 September 2009 decisively rejected the possibility of joining a leftwing-led coalition after the forthcoming election, increasing the likelihood that Angela Merkel will retain her hold on the chancellery.
