Mindful of Moscow, Merkel Applies Brakes in Kiev

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was all smiles on her trip to Ukraine on the 21 July 2008. But behind the smile were teeth gritted to resist Kiev's strong desire to become a member of NATO and the EU. German commentators know that the situation will remain unchanged as long as Europe must depend on Russian gas.
