An emergency meeting will take place in Berlin today (12 January) to discuss Iran's resumption of nuclear enrichment.

Foreign ministers of France, Germany and the UK will meet in the German capital to set out the EU's response to the crisis, along with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana.

On Sunday (8 January) Iran reopened the Nantaz enrichment facility - which critics say can be used to produce fuel for nuclear weapons - breaking an agreement with the EU.

Iran had halted "all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities" since October 2004, as part of a deal to build confidence for talks between Iran and the EU.

The Berlin discussions will focus on the prospects for future talks with Iran and on whether to call an emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The next IAEA meeting had been scheduled for March.

EU representatives will also discuss possible referral to the United Nations Security Council, where Iran could face international sanctions.

Talks between the EU and Iran had already been suspended before the reopening of Natanz, although exploratory talks had taken place in December to see if the process could be restarted.

According to diplomats, the chances of further EU-Iran talks now look bleak.

"We saw going back to [exploratory] talks as a concession," said one diplomat.
