Book abstract:

The White Paper on the modernisation of EC law, approved by the European Commission in April 1999, is the main focus of this book, which is a result of a conference held in London in September 1999. Organised by Hammond Suddard Solicitors and the Centre for the Law of the European Union of University College London, the conference was amongst the first to address the issues surrounding the White Paper.

'Modernisation and Decentralisation of EC Competition Law' brings together the views of contributors and competition authorities from most of the major European countries and from the European Commission on this important development in the evolution of competition law in the European Union. The first five chapters of the book provide the general background to the modernisation and decentralisation of EC competition law with an analysis of its decentralised application, the practical implications of reform, the phases in the administration of competition law and the enforcement system. The second part of the book focuses on the experience of Member States with reactions from France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands as well as an extensive treatment of the situation in the United Kingdom and the entry into force of the UK Competition Act.

This book will be useful for both law and business students.
