Article reported that 'We can do it alone' was the rallying cry to be heard in Italy in August 2012 as economists and politicians presented Prime Minister Mario Monti with proposals to use the country’s own vast but often dormant resources to slash its debt mountain rather than become hostage to the perceived diktat of Germany, the European Commission and European Central Bank.

It was also reported on the 7 August 2012 that Italy's economy shrank 0.7% in the second quarter of 2012, underlining a deepening recession, as government austerity measures continued to affect everything from factory activity to consumer spending.
