Mario Monti, the Italian Prime Minister leading a government of technocrats, faced after a 100 days in office challenges over controversial labour reforms.

On the 4 April 2012 Italy’s technocrat government softened its plans to reform the labour market in the face of opposition from the main trade union and the centre-left Democratic party, in the hope of winning a swift passage through parliament for its controversial legislation and maintaining cross-party unity.
