Business groups in the United Kingdom heaved a sigh of relief at the government's decision 10 August 2005 to postpone until June 2006 the start of a European directive making retailers and manufacturers responsible for the disposal of electronic and electrical materials. The Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment directive requires retailers and manufacturers to dispose of electrical and electronic refuse separately from normal rubbish so it can be processed safely rather than being sent to landfill.
