BERTELSMANN and EMI have abandoned plans for a merger over competition concerns raised by the European Commission.

British music firm EMI looks likely to re-heat plans for a manufacturing and distribution joint venture with its rivals. This follows talks in Brussels on Monday with competition chief Mario Monti which ended in failure for the companies.

Monti was unable to deliver the swift approval insisted upon by EMI, which could otherwise have faced a second antitrust failure in six months.
