Further information:

Nationwide strikes are taking place on 10 April after a call by Germany's Ver.di labour union.

The union, which represents 2.3 million public workers in the country, is asking for a six percent pay increase for public service workers from state and local governments, with a minimum increase of €200 each month.

This strike is affecting airport personnel, local transport and other public services.

As a result, German airline Lufthansa had to cancel more than half of its scheduled flights while its budget subsidiary Eurowings was also affected.

This is reminiscent of the on-going situation in France where workers from the SNCF as well as Air France personnel are striking to protest against the measures of President Macron and demand a pay increase respectively.

Nationwide public service strikes hit Germany on 10 April 2018.
