Abstract:

This slim volume looks at the levels of defence burden-sharing after the enlargement of NATO, in the light of criticism voiced by some Members of the US Congress following the collapse of communism and the post cold-war mission of NATO. It looks at standard measures of burden-sharing by way of GDP percentages, per capita and ratio of labour force in the military. Other measures of burden-sharing are also covered, such as contributions to NATO's Reaction Forces and Peacekeeping Missions as well as economic assistance to the former Warsaw Pact Countries. The book also explores likely trends in burden-sharing and examines NATO's common costs and the effects of European integration.

The book will interest students and scholars in Defence Studies and NATO and European Security and Defence policy.
