North Sea cod fishing ban would ‘devastate’ industry

A report due to be published on 25 October 2002 by scientific advisers to the European Commission is expected to recommend a complete ban on cod fishing in the North and Irish Seas, along with a closure of fishing grounds for haddock, whiting and prawns. The proposals are designed to protect North Sea cod stocks which, according to the Advisory Committee on Fisheries Management, have fallen to critical levels.
